After publishing this story, a reader got in touch about the price of the STM's GPS system asked why it has to be so expensive. We'll be doing a follow up story to try to answer these questions.
From a reader:
"Unfortunately, I have heard this GPS system will come for 200M$, so more than 100k$ per bus (STM says it owns about 1600 bus). Is this true? Just as a reference, MTA (NYC) is currently rolling out the same feature. It costs less than 20k$/bus thanks to the use of open source software and off-the-shelf hardware and they even provide all the technical details on their website to allow other agencies to reuse the same process (http://bustime.mta.info/wiki/T....
Given that the STM constantly raises its fares, I'd like them to explain why they intend to pay 5 times the cost of what the MTA is currently doing."
