MorningFile: Police investigate abuse of force, Harel goes too far, Schwartz’s for sale?

The Montreal police are investigating a video from a Jan. 27 anti-tuition demonstration where police officers are shown assaulting students and pushing them to the ground. Despite a supervisor’s van being on the site in the video, police spokesperson Ian Lafrenière said the force found out about the video through Twitter. (CBC News)
Applebaum loses his cool, calls for Harel’s head
The war of words between Michael Applebaum, the chair of Montreal’s executive committee, and Louise Harel, the head of the city’s official opposition, heated up on Friday. Calling Harel “irresponsible,” “a liar” and “discredited,” Montreal’s number two went on to call for the opposition chief to resign. On Thursday, Harel went to the media and claimed that contractors in city hall were forging the signatures of public employees on reports. (La Presse)
For sale: Schwartz’s?
The Gazette is reporting that Schwartz’s Deli, the queen of the Main, could be changing hands within the near future. Bought by Hy Diamond in 1999, few details have been made available about the possible sale of the delicatessen. Opened in 1928, Schwartz’s popularity has yet to wane.
Quebec to sue construction firms over tunnel collapse
Quebec is suing a consortium of construction companies, including SNC-Lavalin, for the collapse of a 25 tonne concrete beam over the Ville Marie Expressway last July. According to a report released from Transport Quebec, ill-planned maintenance was the blame for the collapse. No one was killed. (CBC News)
Highway deaths down, texting up
While Quebec’s roads are safer, but texting behind the wheel is a growing threat according to the SQ. Despite being banned in 2008, cellphone-related infractions rose by 30 per cent from 2010 to 2011, many involving texting. A quarter of road deaths still involve adults not wearing seat belts.
