MorningFile: Marking Tremblay's ten years with a moustache, Occupy Quebec woes

Gérald Tremblay has been mayor of Montreal for ten years now. He was voted into office on Nov. 4, 2001 and has held on to the top spot in the city through two subsequent elections. What better way to recognize his decade as mayor than by Photoshopping a moustache on his face for Movember? The Journal de Montréal publishes results from a Leger Marketing poll that puts Tremblay's popularity down in the basement, at 17 per cent (well behind Richard Bergeron and Louise Harel). Some Montrealer's who were polled also said they'd like to see MP Denis Coderre replace Tremblay. Ouch. A few days ago the Journal had a look at Tremblay's highs and lows with BIXI at the top, and the water-meter scandal at the bottom.

The Shafia trial has been put on hold after the man accused of killing his first wife and three daughters was taken to the hospital for a medical emergency. It is not known how long the trial will be delayed.

Protesters flooded the streets of downtown Montreal to demonstrate against capitalism yesterday. The protest coincided with the G20 meeting in Cannes, France, where austerity measures are being discussed in response to the debt crisis. The protestors burned an effigy of Stephen Harper.

Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume told Occupy Quebec campers at Place de l'Université-du-Québec that they would have to leave by the end of the day yesterday due to safety concerns after a fire broke out. However, the campers remained on site after city officials came and removed hazardous items. The officials did not remove tents or force people to leave. Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay reassured Square Victoria campers that they can remain as long as they keep the peace and follow the laws set out.
