Who should be Montreal's mayor in 2013?

Gérald Tremblay has been mayor of Montreal for 10 years, has survived three elections and it looks as if he’ll make another run in the 2013 municipal elections. But he won’t be alone in the race.

Louise Harel

On Oct. 16, the current leader of Vision Montreal, Montreal’s official opposition party announced her intention to run for mayor in 2013.

“When we look at the past 10 years, with the water-metre scandal, the Société d'habitation de Montréal mess, the state of public finances and the half-dozen ongoing police investigations, I think Montrealers deserve more than that,” she said at the press conference.

Richard Bergeron

The leader of the second opposition party at city hall, Projet Montreal, also declared his intentions of running for the top job in 2013 on Aug. 28.

While Bergeron and Harel confirmed they would run again in 2013 and Tremblay almost said as much at a Union Montreal rally on Saturday, they are not the only candidates Montrealers would like to see in the race.

Denis Coderre

A Journal de Montreal poll published on Friday found that if the current Liberal MP of Bourassa ran for mayor, 23 per cent of Montrealers would vote for him.

When contacted by OpenFile Montreal, Coderre’s Executive Assistant Maurice Rioux said in an email,
“(Coderre) was touched that voters would see him as mayor and that he would make a decision in due course. He has not made any other comments and it is my understanding he has no intention of making further statements on this matter at this point in time.”

Gilbert Rozon

The founder of Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival is considered a potential candidate after expressing some interest in July of last year.

He has at least one supporter in CJAD’s Tommy Schnurmacher.
