McGill vs. MUNACA: students face disciplinary action
The McGill University Non-Academic Certified Association (MUNACA) strike has been going on since Sept. 1 with both support staff and the University unable to come to any agreement. While discussions are ongoing, several key moves have been made by both sides. OpenFile Montreal has been keeping track of the strike, handing out points as events occur in a somewhat arbitrary bid to keep score of the action outside the negotiation room. As of last week, the score stood at a draw, with three points for MUNACA and three points for McGill University.
As an unofficial referee, OpenFile Montreal has decided to dock a point from McGill University because of the university's decision to pursue two undergraduate students with violating the Code of Student Conduct for their alleged involvement in a rally in support of MUNACA.
Students Micha Stettin and Joël Pedneault, who are both elected officials for the Students Society of McGill University, are accused of breaching the student code because of their involvement in an Oct. 11 demonstration of the “Mobilization Squad.” The Mob Squad – made up of many more than just the two students accused – were rallying in support of MUNACA. Both Stettin and Pedneault face disciplinary action and will know more about their fate after a private interview with the Associate Dean of Arts this Friday.
“There have been many encounters in the past with Mob Squad and the administration. This is part of a process of intimidation. The other parts of the process didn’t work, and this surely won’t either,” Stettin told the McGill Daily. “We will continue to express ourselves, continue to struggle for the things we believe in.”
Pedneault says he wasn't even at the Oct. 11 demo, and was attending an SSMU Executive Committee meeting at the time.
Attempts to reach McGill officials for comment were unsuccessful, but the university issued a statement that was read on CBC Montreal's Daybreak Tuesday morning. It said matters of student discipline are confidential.
The score in McGill vs. MUNACA now stands at:
MUNACA 3, McGill 2
