Gazette copy editor who made front page error is...

Update: 2:15 p.m.

We found the culprit of the error and he was surprisingly willing and brave enough for us to blow his cover. Steve Faguy, copy editor at the Gazette, also known for his blog Fagstein, made the error on the front page and here’s what he shared with OpenFile Montreal when asked if he was working last night. (Full disclosure: Faguy occasionally writes for OpenFile Montreal).

“I was. In fact, I was the one who wrote the pointer (the headline which contained the error) on the front page, and through it all it never hit me that it said "Hamilton Tiger-Cats" and not "Winnipeg Blue Bombers." To say it's embarrassing would be an understatement. I could appeal to the fact that it was written in the rush to deadline, that I was low on sleep and that I wasn't the one who put the names of the teams on the page, but not catching something like that really has no excuse. I await the flood of reader insults. I can't make fun of other media's giant front-page mistakes without taking some of the punishment myself. (I expect I'll be hearing it from my colleagues as well)”

Faguy explained the process of editing the Montreal Gazette’s front page.

“Headlines, like everything else on a newspaper page, are supposed to be read by at least one person before being typeset,” he said. “For the front page, we try to get one or two extra sets of eyes because of its importance. Any final calls are made by the night news editor, who is in charge of the paper after senior managers go home. It's a process that is pretty good at getting obvious typographical or grammatical errors out, but doesn't always work on errors of fact, particularly when the editors doing the reading aren't familiar with the subject matter.”

Mistakes happen but this morning, the Montreal Gazette had a big one on their front page. The headline for the Grey Cup stated: B.C. Lions 34, 23 Hamilton Tiger-Cats... except the Ti-Cats didn’t make it to the final. The losing team was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
